How to unprotect an Excel worksheet
Unprotecting a worksheet lets you edit cells, formulas, shapes, or other elements that the workbook author locked.
- Open the workbook and select the protected worksheet.
- On the ribbon, choose Review.
- In the Protect group, select Unprotect Sheet.
- If Excel asks for a password, enter the password and select OK.

If Unprotect Sheet is unavailable
First confirm that you selected the correct worksheet. If the workbook structure is protected instead of the sheet, go to Review › Protect Workbook. A password-protected sheet or workbook cannot be unlocked without the password; contact the file owner or your organization’s administrator.
Protect the sheet again after editing
When your changes are complete, return to Review › Protect Sheet. Choose which actions users may perform, then add a password only if you can store it securely. Save a backup copy before changing protection settings.
